INTRODUCTION to  DESIGN:

All about design principles and elements -

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN:
1 Emphasis /Focal point /Hierarchy; Emphasis is used by artists to create dominance and focus in their work.
2 Proximity/groupings; Unity; The Principle of Proximity states that you group related items together, move them physically close to each other so the related items are seen as one cohesive group rather than a bunch of unrelated bits.
3 Balance /Tension;  The visual weight of an image. Balance can relate to symmetry, asymmetry or radial balance.
4 Alignment/ Position; Alignment is the placement of text and graphics so they line up on the page
5 Contrast /Proportion; Contrast refers to differences in values, colors, textures, shapes, and other elements.
6 White space /Positive and Negative:
7 Repetition/ Consistency / Ryhthm repetitive elements create a sense of organization.

ELEMENTS Of DESIGN: http://www.noupe.com/design/a-graphic-design-primer-part-1-the-elements-of-a-design.html
1 Lines: Line is a mark made by a pointed tool - brush, pencil, stick, pen, etc. - and is often defined as a moving dot
2 Shapes:Squares (and rectangles), triangles and circles are the three basic shapes
3 Color: changing the hue or saturation of a color can evoke a completely different feeling. Color in design is very subjective.
4 Mass Mass equals size. Each piece you create has a physical mass. Additionally, each element within the design (graphics, photos, lines, text blocks) have their own mass relative to the whole piece
5 Texture: Texture can refer to the actual surface of a design or to the visual appearance of a design
6 Typography: Typography is the means by which a written idea is given a visual form

Critiquing
A well-done critique is a way to step away from the specifics of the design process and better understand how to create great designs. We do this by starting with the current design and asking "What is it we're really trying to do here?" and "How close are we to doing it?"

A critique is different from 'proofing' the design. When we proof, we're looking for those little details, like typos and inconsistencies, that distract us from reaching perfection. Proofing is about polishing, whereas critiquing is about reaching understanding.

It’s probably the best thing you can do to give better criticism and to become a more educated designer. In order to properly form and articulate an opinion about a design, we need to know the principles and patterns we’re dealing with. And without understanding the language, we can’t easily have a conversation about the quality of the design.
